PLA Biodegradable Bags — Compostable Packaging With the Fine Print Included
PLA is the right material when your sustainability claim is compostability, not recycled content — and it is the wrong material if you need high heat resistance or long shelf life. We say that upfront because a failed claim costs more than a film ever will. This page gives you the typical performance envelope, the end-of-life conditions the claim depends on, and the applications where PLA genuinely works.

Read before you specify
The Claim Depends on the End-of-Life
"Biodegradable" is only a valid claim under defined conditions. PLA grades aligned to EN 13432 / ASTM D6400 disintegrate in industrial composting facilities (typically 55–60 °C, controlled humidity); they do not break down meaningfully in home compost, soil, landfill or the ocean on any consumer-relevant timescale.
- Check infrastructure in your target market. Industrial composting access varies widely across the UK, EU and North America; a compostable bag in a market without collection can be a worse claim risk than a recycled-content bag.
- Word the pack correctly. "Industrially compostable where facilities exist" survives green-claims scrutiny; "biodegradable" alone often does not.
- Consider the alternative. If your compliance target is recycled content under EU PPWR, our recycled PE or recycled PP with 30–100% PCR (GRS TE-00057717) is usually the more robust claim. We will tell you which route fits your market — even when the answer is not PLA.

- Brand programmes where the compostability story is central and collection infrastructure exists.
Honest limitations
— Service temperature ceiling ~50 °C — no hot-fill, no summer container-loading without assessment.
— Lower moisture barrier than PE at equal gauge — not for long shelf-life or high-humidity logistics.
— Not compatible with conventional plastic recycling streams; keep PLA out of your rPE/rPP claims.

Finished-bag certification depends on ink coverage and additives — if you need a certified finished article, we scope that testing with you before production.
Usually not, and we will say so. Mailers need puncture resistance, wide seal windows and warehouse-temperature tolerance — rPE outperforms PLA on all three. PLA fits best in shelf-facing retail and short-life food formats where the compostability claim is the point.
